Well i was following the Vsftpd ftp server wiki and ran chmod a-w on my user account, but now startx wont launch openbox and logging in slim doesnt work either. I tried using chmod a-w -R as root on my user account but startx still wont work. Slim reports the error"failed to execute login command" and when i exit slim and use startx it reports " xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/user/.Xauthority". If someone knows a way to revert the chmod a-w so i can fix startx it would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully i dont have to reinstall.

I think you just removed the writing rights from all the files on you home. You could try to add write right to all files owner.
chmod +rw -R ~/
I think that should do it, but i'm not such an experienced user to be sure about it.
Thanks so much that works perfectly, i thought i was going to have delete the user account and reconfigure openbox. Going to create a new account for the vsftpd server so nothing conflicts
I'm glad it helped.
Don't forget to edit the post and change the title to "[SOLVED] How to undo chmod a-w?".
