YouTube crashes linux

I've had this problem with various YouTube videos sometimes. Sometimes watching a YouTube video crashes the GUI (and I'm using LXDE). I'm using an Intel graphics card. The operating system doesn't freeze per se, but graphical display is corrupted, as the contents of windows are not updated to the display. I've seen this problem occur only with YouTube videos using the Firefox browser.

Re: YouTube crashes linux

How about other browsers? How about another DE/WM? Just to see if the same occurs.

Re: YouTube crashes linux

Uninstall flashplugin and see if it helps (it most likely will, since Flash is a POS on Linux). I got rid of it about a year and a half ago and didn't look back. Firefox hasn't crashed on me once since then.

Or you could disable hardware acceleration, I guess. Right click the video, choose "Settings" or whatever it's called and uncheck the little checkbox.

Yeah, I was using the Flash version, which may be the cause. I switched back to HTML5, hope the issue goes away. I'm usually on HTML5, but a few videos are not available using that so I keep switching back to flash.

I need the hardware acceleration though so the video doesn't skip.

I have been thinking about doing this. Are there any instances in which you think to yourself "man having flash would be convenient!" or has the web converted to alternatives enough to make it not so necessary?

I guess I'll just try it when I get home.

Sorry for the OT.

Re: YouTube crashes linux

Do you use any type of compositing window manager overlay like xcompmgr or compton etc..? Seems strange that it would crash your whole wm like that. I switched over to chromium and chromium-pepper-flash-stable from the aur. Haven't had any flash issues since. Still using my old /etc/adobe/mms.cfg too the only thing in it is  "OverrideGPUValidation = true"    Maybe the xorg log contains some clues too? My best guess on this one is the same as DSpider though (hardware acceleration).

Just use clipgrab from the AUR for the few videos that haven't been converted yet. I'm not a fan of YouTube anyway. Too many shitty videos and way too many children with an opinion about something.

I miss porn sites (lol, not really).

But to be fair, I do keep a VM with MicroXP on it (1 GB .vdi file) with just Opera and Flash, mostly for the occasional street view on Google Maps.
