Can't mount cdrom

Hi all,

After switching to kernel 2.6.23 and udev, I can't mount the cdrom anymore. It seems that the device is now /dev/hdc and I have the respective line in /etc/fstab. I also have checked the optical group in /etc/group and it's fine, but when I issue a mount command, nothing happens -- even no error message is given. I know this description is a bit foggy, but perhaps someone can give me a hint on what to look for.

Best regards,
Jan

Re: Can't mount cdrom

Anything relevant in dmesg?

Re: Can't mount cdrom

Indeed, dmesg tells the following:

hdc: lost interrupt
hdc: status error: status=0x7f { DriveReady DeviceFault SeekComplete DataRequest CorrectedError Index Error }
hdc: status error: error=0x7f { IllegalLengthIndication EndOfMedia AbortedCommand MediaChangeRequested LastFailedSense=0x07 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
hdc: DMA disabled
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: ATAPI reset complete
ide-cd: cmd 0x3 timed out
hdc: lost interrupt

Doesn't look good, but what does this mean?

Re: Can't mount cdrom

Just to be sure, is that a data cd?

I don't know what these errors are but it could (wild guess) be a problem with the CD itself. To check that, try mounting another CD.

Re: Can't mount cdrom

Well, I got this dmesg output after a fresh bootup without any CD in the reader. And the last CD I tried before the reboot was definitely a data CD that Ubuntu (installed on the same machine) was able to read. The machine itself is IBM ThinkPad R32, if that can be of any help.

Still no clue,
Jan

Re: Can't mount cdrom

Are you mounting as root to ensure it's definitely not a permissions issue.

The short-term remedy would be to rollback to the last kernel you were using when your cdrom worked ok (even if that means reverting to devfs for now). Once you have your old kernel, try converting to udev. If everything goes well and you get all your drives working, then you should try upgrading again to the latest kernel.

As it stands, you don't know whether your problem is caused by the new kernel or udev. Do one thing at a time.

Re: Can't mount cdrom

Well,

Without doing anything I can now mount the data CD, read data from there and unmount. The thing I can't do is I can't eject the CD any more (?!?). Switching to new kernel and udev was a hassle enough so I don't want to do a rollback. Better wait for a new kernel and hope it's going to be fixed there.

I'm getting the same thing with my thinkpad R32 (2658 BMM), was getting it with the original DVD-ROM drive so bought a DVD-RW and still get the same problem. I suspect its the connector not making good contact.

with the drive inserted it will either boot normally and the drive works or it takes 30+ min to get as far as the grub stage 1.5 message and the drive don't work.
