VLC and changing system volume

For some strange reason, when I'm playing something in VLC and I change my volume, it mutes VLC and/or pauses the playback.

For what reason might this be?

For those who want to know, I'm running GNOME 3.10.

I don't want to work.  I want to bang on the drum all day.

Re: VLC and changing system volume

Do you use pulseaudio? Is this file dependant? What command is being used when hardware volume keys are used? Is auto-mute enabled in alsamixer or any power save options?
