How to uninstall the "default" Firefox plugins?

I installed firefox from the extra repo. Sadly, it came with a bunch of plugins preinstalled (e.g., a Windows and Quicktime plugin). Primary reason I moved to Arch was to be able to install only what I want. This is not conducive to that.

Anybody know how to uninstall the plugins?

I read pacman manual and played around with pacman -Ql and -Qi etc. I also tried looking for some package that contained all the plugins. But I wasn't successful.

Re: How to uninstall the "default" Firefox plugins?

Firefox doesn't come with any plugins. Did you install or configure multimedia playback, like this?

Also, please be specific. The more specific you are about which plugins you want to uninstall then the more people can help you uninstall them. smile

after installing Arch, I did this:

sudo pacman -S firefox

I then opened Firefox and reviewed some of the settings. On the Plugins page (about:addons) I noticed the following as being installed:
DivX Web Player
Gnome Shell Integration
QuickTime Plug-in
VLC Multimedia Plugin
Windows Media Player Plug-in 10

I have not done anything related to enabling any multi-media. I haven't even tried to play or do anything media related on my Arch install. So I assumed they came bundled in the Firefox install. Perhaps I assumed wrong (based on your post)?

Re: How to uninstall the "default" Firefox plugins?

I think totem provides the plugins in such a way that they are being listed like that, I could be wrong though, not a gnome user.

The default Arch Linux installation doesn't even have a GUI, so I assume you've installed more than just Firefox. wink Are you using Arch Linux or one of it's derivatives?

On the Plugins page (about:addons) I noticed the following as being installed:
DivX Web Player
Gnome Shell Integration
QuickTime Plug-in
VLC Multimedia Plugin
Windows Media Player Plug-in 10

It looks like VLC and GNOME Shell have been installed at least at some point... Will you please post the list of packages that are installed on your computer? ("pacman -Q")

Sorry, I wish I was home at my Arch Linux installation right now to help you out more. sad

Do you use a desktop environment? Which one?

Yeah. Sorry for my assumption. I guess I assumed everyone uses some sort of GUI system (browsing the web is fun without GUI?). I installed Arch CLI and just what I needed to get setup and running. and then installed the "gnome " group. Then I installed Firefox. I've since installed a few other things after this, like Chromium, dnsutils, lsof, git, ubuntu-font, thunderbird, etc. But these were all AFTER I installed Firefox and firefox had the plugins there.

I'll post the output of pacman -Q in next post.

Re: How to uninstall the "default" Firefox plugins?

What's in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/? What package owns these files (pacman -Qo)?

Edit: holy crap, code tags, please!

Re: How to uninstall the "default" Firefox plugins?

about:plugins in firefox lists the plugin files. I guess you'll find these:

$ pkgfile -sgv '/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/lib[gt]*'
testing/gnome-shell 3.14.0-1	/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libgnome-shell-browser-plugin.so
extra/gnome-shell 3.12.2-1 /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libgnome-shell-browser-plugin.so
extra/totem 3.12.1-2 /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libtotem-cone-plugin.so
extra/totem 3.12.1-2 /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libtotem-gmp-plugin.so
extra/totem 3.12.1-2 /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libtotem-mully-plugin.so
extra/totem 3.12.1-2 /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libtotem-narrowspace-plugin.so
extra/totem 3.12.1-2 /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libtotem-vegas-plugin.so

Re: How to uninstall the "default" Firefox plugins?

Looks like the other guys solved it: the plugins come with the "totem" package. If you don't want those plugins then try removing "totem". Does that do what you wanted?

Browsing the Internet from the command line works just fine. Arch Linux can be whatever you want it to be. smile

Do you know what is in the "gnome" group? I mean, do you REALLY know? The Firefox plugins were probably installed when you installed that group. In other words, Arch Linux was exactly what you made it. wink

These two quotes are like oil and water ... or matter and anti-matter - they nearly made my head explode.

Gnome is great (though not for me) and the gnome package group is great - but it is great for people who don't want to pick and chose to install only what they want, instead they want to just opt in to the whole shebang and get everything the gnome-people think is useful.  There is absolustely nothing wrong with this mentality, but it is entirely antithetical to the quote from your initial post.

Well, it's more of my ignorance in failing to understand that installing something from Gnome would "defile" firefox. I thought a gnome install would limit itself to gnome software (e.g., epiphany). So I *inappropriately* assumed that the firefox package itself came with more than the bare essentials of what was needed (i.e., the plugins). Sounds like Firefox got changed from installing a gnome thing. Not a firefox thing.

PS: you guys that are commenting here, what kind of installs do you have? Is there a place in the forum where I can read up on how others use Arch? Like what DE do you use? Do you not use a DE? etc

What if I want Totem, or I want VLC? Is there a way to just get the media player app without that additional plugin crap? Or is the only way to compile from source? I'm new and haven't quite figured out how to do that yet.

gnome applications provide plugins that firefox can use. You should be able to disable the plugins in firefox if you don't want to use them.

You'll likely find threads of interest in the "try this" subforum.  There are topics for users-preferred applications, pstree-type output to see what other users actually run on a daily basis, screenshot threads where users generally report their WM/DE and share configs, etc.

Personally I do not use any DE, and even avoid toolkits as much as possible.  I've accepted gtk2 as a tolerable compromise (currently only required by firefox).

That's really mostly up to you. Media players are a dime a dozen in the *nix world. You'll have to find one that does what you want the way you want, and that mostly means installing and trying them out. The simplest option for a full-featured media player would probably be MPV, which only installs libraries it needs and does not include a GUI.

Primary reason I moved to Arch was to be able to install only what I want.

The cost of that is that, if you've previously used a distribution where everything was decided for you, you don't know what you want. You can't know, because you don't know how everything fits together. Quite often, using a more minimal system requires you to learn a) how things fit together; and b) which old habits you'll need to sacrifice.

Sure it does - and a wonderfully elegant and well designed one.  I just doesn't use a toolkit just for the sake of using a toolkit wink  Mpv is actually one of my favorite examples of a perfect gui without relying on a toolkit - the UI can be made just to do what the program needs.

I know it has "Play," "Pause," etc. buttons once a file is opened, but it doesn't have the GUI most people expect (toolbar, file browser, play queue and so on). Not that I'm aware of, anyway.

Read through these two lists of applications:

List of applications
List of window managers

...decide what looks interesting, and try it. If you don't like it, just uninstall it. smile

okay, this mpv is pretty cool.

Can you guys (e.g., trilby) give me an idea about what stuff I would install to do the GUI gnome stuff without using the "GUI"? Say I never installed gnome but want to be able to watch videos, browse the web, view photographs. mpv will allow me to watch videos. Trilby, you surf web from CLI? I've read thru the Applications and Desktop Environment wikis, etc. And I've tried several out even before coming to Arch. But I'm more interested in what seasoned Arch guys are using (or not using). As a newbie, I'm trying to learn a different way of doing things and I'm interested in how others that have been here a while have done things. Then I can start exploring and testing from that starting point to see how it goes.

Probably not.  First, You have the list of applications.  Try them, see what you like.  Second, I don't really know what you mean.  You can't do 'gui-stuff' without a gui.  But a gui is not the same as a DE.  You can browse the web without X using lynx, w3m, elinks, or others.  But as mentioned above, I do tolerate gtk2 to be able to use firefox (in X).  You do not need a DE to run X.  You don't even need a WM to run X.

Rather that asking what to install, ask what you want.  If you want a video player, look up (or do a pacman search) for video players.  Mpv would be one of the results of such a search.  Do you want to be able to read pdfs?  Look up pdf viewers.  evince, or okular or whatever they are will be inlcuded in those results, but so too will mupdf and zathura, and others.

We can't tell you what you will like.  We can only give you the resources - which has already been done.
