[Xorg 7.0] Changing Cursor Theme

Hi guys, I used to change my cursor theme modifying /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/.? (I don't remember the name of that file), what about Xorg 7.0?, where should I put my cursor theme, and where make it default?

Re: [Xorg 7.0] Changing Cursor Theme

/usr/share/icons/default/index.theme

Mine contains:

[Icon Theme]
Inherits=justblue

and my cursors are in /usr/share/icons/justblue/cursors

Re: [Xorg 7.0] Changing Cursor Theme

that's strange, it didn't work for me. i didn't even have a /usr/share/icons/default directory. i made one and created the index.theme file, moved the jimmac icons into /usr/share/icons, but no go.

where is it even reading the default icons from if there was no default directory? i searched my system, but there was no other index.theme file, either. wtf? :?:

I don't have that folder, 2. Creating one and adding the files had no effects at all. Btw the mixture of xorg mouse cursors and themes, icons in one folder is really ugly.

i totally agree. and although strictly speaking i guess they *are* icons, wouldn't it have been better for X to specify them as cursors, e.g. in the index.theme, etc.?  roll

>>edit: i put the icons in ~/.icons and added them to ~/.Xdefaults, and i get the right "busy" cursor while the desktop is loading. but then once it's loaded, they've reverted to the X default cursors again. so apparently something in xorg 7.0 is even overriding ~/.Xdefaults. mad

Re: [Xorg 7.0] Changing Cursor Theme

I forgot to say that I'm using KDM and KDE. Perhaps other WMs override the X default?

I get neat cursors on the KDM login screen as well as by default for all users.

When I went to xorg 7, I too spent some time looking for the default monochrome X cursors in order to put the "justblue" folder in the right place, but couldn't find them so gave up.

Re: [Xorg 7.0] Changing Cursor Theme

it must be an xfce4 thing. i looked through the ~/.config/xfce4, but i didn't notice anything related to icons. i wonder where it's getting overrided? :?:

>>edit: nope, i just loaded kde and i get the default cursors there, too. it's quite an annoyance, but i'm just too busy to deal with these kinds of small (though maddening tongue) things now. i'll post back if i find the solution, thanks.

Re: [Xorg 7.0] Changing Cursor Theme

I created /usr/share/icons/default/ directory and index.theme inside and it works perfectly wink

mad tongue

out of curiosity, what desktop/wm?

I'm still on xorg6.8 here, and the index.theme is executable (755).  You might want to try that (FWIW  wink )

Re: [Xorg 7.0] Changing Cursor Theme

shame for me if it was a thing of permission. I created the file as root, so I doubt it is 755. Will check it out soon!

OMG - you guys aren't going to believe this -- i feel so dumb.

the "I" in "Inherits" in the index.theme file is case-sensitive! lol  i tried switching it to upper-case and now it works. tongue

Re: [Xorg 7.0] Changing Cursor Theme

Ha, nearly the same here. Inherit != Inherits. REALLY STUPID.
Ok, depending wether one can read and type it really works.

Same thing for me... i created a "/usr/share/icons/Default" folder while it's supposed to be "default", and same with "[Icon Theme]".
