No english text-to-speech in firefox and google translate

Hi all,

I have a weird problem. When I google-translate something, I can't get to hear the word in English. For example, here:

If I click on the speaker on the english box, I won't hear anything; on the other hand, if I click on the speaker icon in
the Greek box, I'll hear the word.

This only happens in firefox, and not in chromium. It also happens when I start firefox with a clean profile, without
any addons or anything tinkered with.

Any ideas why this happens and how to fix?

Thanks. This is very weird, I also have FF 45.0.1. I don't have anything muted, and flash is activated. In any case, I can listen to the Greek word so it should be working.

I just re-ran it with developer tools open. Network activity shows the following files are accessed for the two buttons respectively: (Edit: BTW, this was done from work using Windows. No longer comparing Apples to Apples, but the network activity may be of use)

The "accept" part seems to be the same as in firefox. This is the weirdest problem..

PS. I copy/pasted the headers here but I'm not sure how to interpret the output. Also I googled around and the only similar issue that I found was with some people who got their problem solved by installing some gstreamer plugins. I have all the gstreamer plugins already installed, so I don't think this is related.
