[Solved] Used Fn + F10 (MUTE) and now volume permanently muted.

I used some of my functions keys to mute the volume however it doesn't toggle off/on and now it's permanently muted. Same happens with the wifi fn key but when I reset the arch the wifi worked again, but not with the volume. How do I get volume back and how do I get to have a toggling fn keys?

Are you using Alsa? If so try "$ alsactl restore" . (I don't remember if you must be in root or sudo. I don't believe so.)

Toggling with keys? Google is a good place to start.

BTW, which DE are you using?

Using pulseaudio I think. DE is XFCE4.

You "think" is never a good sign, this is easily veryfiable and you should know if you have it installed or not, because this should've been a conscious decision. Post

uname -a
pacmd list-sinks
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
amixer -c$yourcard #Where your card is the index as indicated by aplay -l

When you logout or shutdown are you saving the session? If so, this may be part of the problem. The ability to save a session is a nice feature of Xfce when needed (as in using compositors such as Compiz) but can be a problem at other times. (Don't forget, the auto session-save feature may also be enabled.)

I have the same problem, or a very similar one, and have had on two laptops and various Linux distributions for the last, oh, 9 years or so (both Thinkpads, idk if the hardware is relevant). What I've noticed is that pressing the mute key mutes both the speaker and the master volume, but pressing it again only toggles the master leaving the speaker muted.

I never use the mute key intentionally but I have pavucontrol installed and I use that to fix it when it happens. Sorry, I don't know how to permanently fix the problem.

EDIT: using pulse audio, but my sound icon is saying alsa mixer. so yeah, pulse audio.

Nah, autosave is off. made sure to turn it off as I enjoy having a fresh start. auto-save is also off.

Yeah, got busy and only just got around to installing it. Got pretty far with looking on wikis and not asking for help, pretty proud lol.

Problem solved downloaded and ran most fn keys work now too.
systemctl enable acpid.service
