Hi ! I've just started using Arch.
I am having trouble with installing the video card drivers on my laptop.
SPECS :
2 GB RAM
AMD E1 - 2500 Dual Core 1,4GHz
AMD Radeon HD 8240
When I am trying to use the AUR I get a "Extraction failed" error.
When I try the drivers from the developer site, I got the error :
"fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers for greater than 3.6 release. /lib/modules/4.7.0-1-ARCH/build/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system."
So...what should I do ?
Sorry for my awful English. It's not my natal language.

Depending from your card:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI
There are already at the repositories.

You definitely should install from AUR. Tell us the exact package from AUR you are building because there are 2 drivers for AMD video cards: open source "radeon" and closed source Catalyst "fglrx". AMD Kabini was tested under Linux before. See, for example, this review.

Just install xf86-video-ati from official repositories, and you should have everything needed to be able to start X using open source radeon driver.
If it doesn't work out of the box, check trough https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI
You can install and switch to using the closed source fglrx driver later, if you find it necessary.

I tried again to install it from AUR : "catalyst" and I got the same "Extract failed" error.
I installed xf86-video-ati. It should improve my games performance like the closed source driver ?
Offline
The closed source driver is usually better at 3D.

There is a compiled Catalyst driver in an unofficial repository. Installation procedure.

I managed somehow to install the unofficial one after downgrading xorg to 1.17, but when I try to launch AMD Control Center, I get this
There was a problem initializing Radeon Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following.
No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly.
Please install the AMD driver appropriate for you AMD hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

when I try to launch AMD Control Center, I get this
ATI Catalyst Control Center works only if started as root.

When I try
sudo amdcccle
I get some errors(Image)
Also, when I try
gksudo amdcccle
I got the same initialization error window and errors

StefanSF, did you install catalyst 15.9 or 15.12 ?
15.12 removed support for several relatively new cards.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
(A works at time B) && (time C > time B ) ≠ (A works at time C)

I really don't know...
After I installed it, the next boot I could not open anything graphically.
So, here I am, blaming AMD, with a fresh Arch + (ugly)XFCE fresh install

I really don't know...
read man pacman completely (I recommend to do that 3 or 4 times at least ), pay extra attention to the Query options.
That should allow you to answer "which catalyst version (could be none) is installed on your system ?" yourself.
----------------------------
AMD has switched to a new driver schema and no longer develops catalyst.
While catalyst may still work for many years, it will be stuck to using old Xorg versions .
The open sourcedrivers for most cards supported by catalyst 15.9 / 15.12 perform very close to catalyst performance, are a lot stabler and will keep improving .
Currently there are just 2 reasons to stick to catalyst :
- some application you need doesn't work well with opensource drivers.
The number of those apps dropped dramatically since open sourcedrivers reached OpenGL 4.3 support, and OpenGL 4.5 support is not far away.
- you need OpenCL
Decide for yourself if those reasons apply to you, so we can help you further.

Exactly, what Catalyst package from AUR have you installed? Installing Catalyst requires a lot of steps, for example, disabling kernel mode setting. One wrong step, and you are in the trash.
Strangely, I can run "amdcccle" without "gksu".

As I said, I have a fresh Arch install, so I'll do all the steps again more carefully.

BTW, if your computer is unresponsive because of a bad video driver, you can run LiveCD, install or remove packages by "chroot", and fix configuration in the command line. No need to install Arch again.

For older cards, and I'd say yours can be considered an older card, you are better off with the open source driver, which is what AMD recommends anyway. You shouldn't need to run 'Xorg :0 -configure', delete or rename any configuration files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and try starting X/your DE of choice again (after having installed xf86-video-ati of course).
