After my latest update (which included an update of Virtualbox from 5.1.2-2 -> 5.1.2-3), the virtualbox application has stopped working. It launches with no error messages but nothing happens---no GUI, no message to console. I can see there are three processes running:
>ps aux | grep virtualbox
stefano 30259 0.7 0.3 757488 59984 pts/4 Sl+ 23:16 0:00 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox
stefano 30275 0.0 0.0 80372 9184 ? S 23:16 0:00 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxXPCOMIPCD
stefano 30280 0.0 0.0 246084 12788 ? Sl 23:16 0:00 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxSVC --auto-shutdownrg
but no interface (graphical or otherwise).
I tried reinstalling virtualbox and reloading the kernel modules manually, but nothing changed.
Starting virtualbox with the --debug flag has no effect---no output to console.
Suggestions welcome.

those are older versions of virtualbox. probably dumb question but what about pacman -Syyu? linux 4.7.2-1 and its headers, and virtualbox 5.1.4-1 and its associated ext's and host-modules corrected a lot of problems with the versions you listed.

Silly me, I should have thought of the -yy switch.
virtualbox is now upgraded and functioning (for some reason it logged me out the first time I tries to start a VM, but it's been working since).
Thanks!
