Arch froze the other day and now many things are breaking.

Hi all,

The other day I was using my PC and then my PC froze and my screens went all weird colors(I believe my packages were updating in the background at this time). After a hard reset, I noticed my wifi would no longer works, so I continued to update the packages and that didn't help fix that.
Today my PC has frozen roughly 10 times within 2 hours, this doesn't seem to be reproducible at this time. The icons on my desktop are not visible(Gnome WM) and a few applications don't start any more like Gparted which gets the error listed below.

[francis@francis-pc ~]$ sudo gparted

My keyboard is still slightly functional when my PC freezes, for example I can turn the num lock light on/off.

I have also checked CPU temp and for any memory leaks.

I initally thought that this was an issue with arch linux but now I no longer belive so.

Re: Arch froze the other day and now many things are breaking.

Hm i just booting from my other ssd(windows) and opened hw monitor to see if there is anything that's very hot, I noticed the CPUTIN was 128 degrees which I initially assumed was a bug but then windows completely froze?

What is in your journal when the machine freezes?

Re: Arch froze the other day and now many things are breaking.

Interesting thing... I unplugged 2 of my monitors(I now have 1) and not experiencing any freezes yet?

Re: Arch froze the other day and now many things are breaking.

Likely just a reset GPU and the GNOME compositor wets itself.
When it happens, see whether you can ctrl+alt+F1, also enable zapping (ctrl+alt+backspace) and see whether you can terminate the X server (and gnome) this way.

It happens on windows aswell.

I found a temporary solution... just leave one of the three screens unplugged!

Re: Arch froze the other day and now many things are breaking.

I can confirm this issue with gparted, i'm using dual screen with amd foss driver.
It was the same on my laptop with only one screen (nvidia driver).
Same log as posted in first post, but my system are not freezing.
Except sometime when i'm using some vm on VirtualBox,  all the software are force closed or something like that and bring me back to gdm.
Sorry, i  can't provide any log on this one right now.

@frazboyz, does the GPU have a dedicated power supply?

One of the three, as in any monitor (and not a particular monitor) plugged into any port?

If so, are your PC's power demands being met?

Re: Arch froze the other day and now many things are breaking.

Look like it's an issue with the sudo command, i got the same issue with baobab.
It was the same as root user.

sudo LANG=C baobab
No protocol specified
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused

(baobab:26926): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

It's working fine without the sudo command.

Sudo often doesn't work correctly with graphical applications.
