Wacom tablet "broke" during upgrade

I just upgraded my system, and something switched the behavior of my Wacom CTE-440 tablet. (That thing is basically an antiquity.) Before the upgrade, it worked as a mouse replacement, now I have an additional cursor and can confirm that the tablet works but as a different input device, for example I can't switch Firefox tabs by clicking with the tablet but I can switch windows. The problem with debugging is, that it seems to be default behavior and that I had not updated for two weeks, so that all the usual suspects got updated at once.

$uname -a
Linux angmar 4.8.4-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Oct 22 18:26:57 CEST 2016 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$lsusb
[SNIP]
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 056a:0015 Wacom Co., Ltd CTE-440 [Graphire4 (4x5)]

Some of the updates from today, the full output from `grep '2016-10-25' /var/log/pacman.log` is posted to http://pastebin.com/wdPix26B

$grep '2016-10-25' /var/log/pacman.log|grep linux
[SNIP]
[2016-10-25 13:44] [ALPM] upgraded linux (4.7.6-1 -> 4.8.4-1)
$grep '2016-10-25' /var/log/pacman.log|grep gnome-shell
[2016-10-25 13:43] [ALPM] upgraded gnome-shell (3.20.4-1 -> 3.22.1+2+g5a08886-1)
$grep '2016-10-25' /var/log/pacman.log|grep systemd
[2016-10-25 13:42] [ALPM] upgraded libsystemd (231-3 -> 231-4)
[2016-10-25 13:42] [ALPM] upgraded systemd (231-3 -> 231-4)
[2016-10-25 13:45] [ALPM] upgraded systemd-sysvcompat (231-3 -> 231-4)
$grep '2016-10-25' /var/log/pacman.log|grep x11
[2016-10-25 13:42] [ALPM] upgraded libx11 (1.6.3-1 -> 1.6.4-1)

PS: I apologize if this is the wrong subforum, but since this happened during an upgrade I thought it is probably best to post it here.

Gnome?  If so, are you still running Xorg, or did you follow the Gnome down the Wayland rabbit hole?

Re: Wacom tablet "broke" during upgrade

I note that you are running gnome on open source graphics drivers, so you are probably now running the gnome wayland session (unless you have explicitly chosen to use the X11 session). Try running gnome in an X11 session and if that doesn't help, try booting the linux-lts kernel.

Mod note: Not an upgrade issue, moving to NC.

EDIT: snap!

Re: Wacom tablet "broke" during upgrade

Thank you, that gave me the right keywords for google. This is indeed a wayland design choice and the rationale can be found at https://blogs.gnome.org/carlosg/2016/04 … is-merged/. So for now it seems that I have to use xorg until I manage to coerce wayland into accepting a tablet as mouse.

May be more fruitful to push firefox (for example) into properly reacting to multiple  pointers.
