[UPDATE]
I was able to resolve the problem by using gdm instead of lightdm - not sure why, but with no other changes all work fine!
[quickupdate]
trying to 'startx' gives the following error:

Hi all,
I am new arch user; I got a new pc and wanted to test arch.
I installed arch last week, the system worked great. my pc has nvidia optimus and wanted to use dual monitor, I followed all the instruction in the arch wiki, with no succes. I updated the files based on this discussion (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=221790), again no success
earlier today I tried the small modifications presented here (https://unix.stackexchange.com/question … 276#321276), and since then I cannot log in;
boot hangs, and I could not even log in without gui (multi-user.target)
with a live cd I deleted all the new files, but again the same problem
then I added an xorg.conf file (generic) and I can boot w/o gui (use ctrl+alt+2 when boot hangs)
any suggestions on how to restore settings?
cheers,
Dimitris

Please edit your post and a) choose a title that actually reflects your issue (starting X) https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ow_to_post and b) use code tags when pasting to the boards:

Hi,
1. to restore every setting, you can undo everything you have done. If you have a file in which you log changes you have made to Arch, that can guide you. I advise you to use such a thing.
2. a clean reinstall surely restores the default settings. After that you should set up X.
3. Why do you need to edit anything to use that 2nd monitor?
I made my 2nd monitor work like this:
https://hacklog.mu/arch-linux-dualscreen/
No config file editing was needed. After you set up these:
Xfce has a Displays setting. You can use that to switch the 2nd monitor on and off.
Edit: you have a screen called 'nvidia'. That sounds like wrong configuration. If you type xrandr in a terminal, you'll see how your screens are called.

Thanks, the problem is that my laptop has dual graphic card (Nvidia Optimus); basically there is an intel integrated one, for general use, and a high performance Nvidia - this makes it tricky!

@darlac: And you read this page, right? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

@mrunion: yes, I did -the archwiki is pretty detailed for the Optimus and bumblebee [which I am currently using]; but minor differences might lead to one system working one not!
