I am trying to do GPU programming on my integrated intel graphics HD 4600. However whenever I run intel_gpu_top or intel_gpu_time, the kernel hangs and I have to do a force reboot. I have tried using the tools while using the intel driver (xf86-video-intel) and the without (using the modesetting driver in Xorg). I can't disable 3D acceleration I don't have any other GPU available.
Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this?
Thanks in advance
I am using Linux Hardened kernel 4.11 if it helps

Have you tried with the current stable kernel in [core] or with 4.11.2 in [testing]? Maybe some kernel configuration or hardening patch is causing trouble.
I have an HD Graphics 520 and intel_gpu_top runs fine here with the stable kernel from [core].

It was moved not long before I posted and I suppose the mirror I'm using had not synced yet, besides the OP asked yesterday and 4.11 was still in [testing].
I have retested with 4.11 in core now and it also works. The advice still stands, try with the kernel in core and we'll go from there.

I tried the normal kernel in the core, it still hangs whenever I run it

You could try to have a terminal running 'dmesg -w' visible while you try to run intel_gpu_top and see if you can catch any clue as to why things hang. Also try checking the logs of your previous boots to see if any error messages have been logged (which I doubt since the machine hangs but doesn't hurt to check).
Except for this I can't think of anything else except asking for help upstream as this may be due to a bug only they can solve.

The issue seems to be solved with the latest kernel updates
Thanks everyone
UPDATE:
Problem still persists, seems to be random
