[GPG] Is it safe to remove env. variable GPG_TTY?

I am trying to use pinentry-tty as default pinentry for gpg. But the problem is when I am running X, pinentry dialog box appears on tty instead of the current terminal.
I found out that removing environmental variable GPG_TTY=${tty} solved this problem. Is it safe to remove this, as everywhere in the manual and wiki they say to always set this variable.
Thanks.

Where did you set it? The tty command will output the tty device of the terminal it is run from. It sounds more like that variable is not being set correctly.

I am sourcing ~/.env.sh in ~/.bashrc, all environmental variables are kept in .env.sh including this one. Putting this variable directly in .bashrc doesn't make any difference. Gtk version of pinentry works correctly with or without this variable, while tty/curses versions shows password prompt only on tty when this variable is set.
