I have Arch installed in MacBookPro11,3. It has Nvidia graphics [1] and is using nouveau driver. Everything works perfect, except the system freezes randomly.[2]
Any suggestion how can I resolve this ?
I tried switching to 'nvidia' driver. It works but then screen backlight feature doesn't work. I guess it is bios/driver incompatibility. I stopped going this route and trying to see if there is a fix for nouveau driver.
Kernel:
Linux archlinux 4.14.13-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jan 10 11:14:50 UTC 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Thanks!

I can't really help with the nouveau part, but if you want to try nvidia again, they have recently added a backlight handler, which has to be activated via a module parameter, if you want to test that, you can load it with the kernel parameter
nvidia.NVreg_EnableBacklightHandler=1

V1del, thanks I will give that a try.
In the meantime I added Kernel parameter nouveau.modeset=1 with the nouveau driver and it has not crashed in last 9 hours, longest uptime so far with nouveau driver

Thats weird, modeset should be enabled by default, but yeah maybe some interaction issue that disables it? I don't want to damper your hopes and if this works then that's nice, however it usually should be already enabled so you might've just gotten lucky.

It hasn't crashed yet, so I guess this fix is working for now. If nouveau ever crashes, I will try out the nvidia driver with the bl settings and will update this thread.
