[solved] cannot clear the disk in UEFI install

I want to install Arch on my laptop with windows 10 preinstalled. The drive is encrypted. Gdisk presents two partitions: basic data partition and efi system partition. First is of size 32k, the second 12mb. Even though my drive is over 400gb there is no third partition to be seen neither can I use the space.

I replaced these partitions with new one. It seems I cannot use more than 128mb of the disc. I tried to create new empty GPT but even though gdisk prints "the operation has completed successfully" I can see lots of messages like this

ata1.00: exception emask 0x1 sact 0x0 serr 0x0 action 0x0
ata1.00: failed command: WRITE DMA

Any operation with gdisk or parted does not effect the hard drive.

Is there some kind of protection on? I had to disable secure boot in order to boot arch iso. I was following arch install guide. Yes, I verified I boot into uefi mode.

How can I partition such hard drive?

Re: [solved] cannot clear the disk in UEFI install

Try blkdiscard(8) (if it is an SSD) or see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Securely_wipe_disk

Otherwise, have you checked the firmware ("BIOS") menus for an option to disable the encryption?

How is the drive encrypted?

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: [solved] cannot clear the disk in UEFI install

Do you want to keep windows or do you want to wipe it all clean?

Re: [solved] cannot clear the disk in UEFI install

I want to wipe the drive clean. As far as I know the drive is encrypted with bitlocker. I have tried blkdiscard, hdparm (ata security erase) and dd (urandom). Seems like dd managed to write something down because windows does not boot anymore. However, every command results in kernel (?) printing the error message I presented in the first post.

I even tried to install debian with their fancy graphical installer. Failed on partitioning the disc, again.

Re: [solved] cannot clear the disk in UEFI install

Please post the full output of dmesg, I begin to suspect that if the SSD is capable of self encryption that bitlocker may be using it.

Also the output of...

hdparm -I /dev/sdX

all I did was `parted` then `print`. I got warning that primary is ok but secondary table is corrupted. I was asked if the GPT should be fixed, then errors happened.

Re: [solved] cannot clear the disk in UEFI install

Searches for the error messages seem to show hardware-related problems — could the cable/connector be damaged?

I've never dealt with firmware-encrypted drives (if that is what we are dealing with here) but does this help: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Se … ing_Drives

This bit from `dmesg` looks relevant (perhaps):

[ 4.843740] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] supports TCG Opal

Re: [solved] cannot clear the disk in UEFI install

The line Head_on_a_Stick mentions probably explains why you can't write to the SSD and why you only see two small partitions.

Install sedutil[1] from the aur and post the output of 'sedutil-cli --query /dev/sda'.

Edit:
You may have to boot with libata.allow_tpm=1 in order to let sedutil communicate with the SSD.

Re: [solved] cannot clear the disk in UEFI install

I've found out the disc is indeed self-encrypted. Without the proper key I cannot do anything. Thanks for help.
