Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 8265 not working correctly

Hello,

I've been having issues with my WiFi PCI card for some weeks and I can't pinpoint their cause. Basically, my WiFi connection is very inconsistent. It keeps going away and coming back every 60-90 seconds.
It remains connected to my access point, so it technically never goes fully away, but it effectively stops working. When I'm using Chrome and click on a link, I see the loading circle spinning anticlockwise for quite long until the website finally loads properly.
Sometimes (rarely though) it doesn't even load but I end up with the Chrome's gray screen saying that something went wrong with the connection; refreshing the page usually allows me to connect to the website I was trying to connect to, demonstrating that was not an issue on their side (it also has happend more than once so I truly doubt it was a problem on their side). Telegram Desktop also shows "Connecting..." with the loading spinner every now and then, so the cause of the issue is not even my browser.

Looking at the output of dmesg, everything looks fine:

[gianluca@mars ~]$ dmesg | grep wifi
[    1.661830] iwlwifi 0000:04:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[    1.668714] iwlwifi 0000:04:00.0: loaded firmware version 36.e91976c0.0 op_mode iwlmvm
[    1.728760] iwlwifi 0000:04:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 8265, REV=0x230
[    1.786989] iwlwifi 0000:04:00.0: base HW address: f8:59:71:ec:89:5c
[    1.864741] iwlwifi 0000:04:00.0 wlp4s0: renamed from wlan0

I was getting really annoyed so I performed a hard reset of my access point but the problem is still there. I don't even think that the problem is caused by the PCI card itself because on Windows (I'm dual booting), everything works flawlessly: pages on Chrome load instantly and Telegram desktop never comes up with the loading spinner.

A further (and weird) detail I've noticed, is that updating software with pacman doesn't seem to be affected. My connection has always allowed me to download thing at a maximum speed of 850-900kB/s. Downloads with pacman consistently maintain that speed.

Any idea?

Try booting Windows and disabling Wake-On-LAN.

It's already disabled. Here's the screenshot. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.  I see nothing wrong with that output.  I was checking that multiple things were not trying to control the network.

I've tried all the ways I'm aware of to troubleshoot the problem but I've had no luck! The only thing I have to hope for is that a kernel update will solve the issue, at this point.

Is it just chrome that you're getting issues with? You say pacman is fine, perhaps it's a chrome plugin or lab that you've enabled?

Also, you have nftables enabled, check the configuration of this too.

Also when you are seeing issues with chrome are there any errors/info in the logs that might be helpful.

Re: Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 8265 not working correctly

No, it's not just Chrome I'm having issues with. Like I said, there's also Telegram Desktop. Furthermore, while downloading things with pacman is fine, after issuing "# pacman -Syu" it takes a while to start updating the databases. It almost feels like it's very slow at establishing the connection, and then it's good to go.

Yes, I had nftables enabled and I followed the guide on the wiki to set it up for a single machine. Here's my nftables config file:

table inet filter {
        chain input {
                type filter hook input priority 0; policy drop;
                ct state established,related accept
                iif "lo" accept
                ct state invalid drop
                ip protocol icmp icmp type echo-request ct state new accept
                ip protocol udp ct state new jump UDP
                ip protocol tcp tcp flags & (fin | syn | rst | ack) == syn ct state new jump TCP
                ip protocol udp reject
                ip protocol tcp reject with tcp reset
                meta nfproto ipv4 counter packets 0 bytes 0 reject with icmp type prot-unreachable
        }

        chain forward {
                type filter hook forward priority 0; policy drop;
        }

        chain output {
                type filter hook output priority 0; policy accept;
        }

        chain TCP {
        }

        chain UDP {
        }
}

# vim:set ts=2 sw=2 et:

Anything wrong? Either way, I've just tried to disable the service entirely and nothing's changed.

Chrome doesn't seem to show any error in the logs. The extensions I have are not many:

  • uBlock Origin

  • React Dev Tools

  • Google Dictionary

  • Google Docs Offline

Re: Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 8265 not working correctly

That looks ok to me, and we can probably discount it on the basis there's no change when it's disabled.

I assume that there's no issue with this wifi network on windows, or from ther devices?

If so then you need to look at the networkmanager config. Have you changed anything from the defaults? Particulary regarding dns or possibly dhcp?

Re: Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 8265 not working correctly

Ok so, I think I found a solution (kind of). Basically, my WiFi router is a dual-band; I was previously connected to the 2.4 Ghz network and I've now tried tried to connect to the 5 Ghz network. All the problems seem to be gone.

I've been connected to it for more than an hour now so I guess I was getting some interference or something...
