Also, if I look at the test image on higher density displays - laptop is 4k @ 13.3" there is no perceived fringing at least to my eyes.

@deepsoul based on the xrandr info you provided you're looking at getting at least a 5k display at that size to achieve close to "retina display" 250-300dpi in order to minimise this effect.

I used a color picker. They are.
But yes and as mentioned: could be the camera. (Notably since at least jpegs are usually post-processed inside the camera)
