ALSA volume control confusion

Hi! I ran alsamixer on a machine with an ALC892 audio chip and found very strange db labellings in the Capture section. Eg. having the "Capture" slider on +12db by default which is 40% and the 0db is on 18%. 100% corresponds to +30db amplification according to the dB gain label on the top. Is it normal? In audacity I can c that the signal level is correct at the 18% setting when feeding a signal from a CD(!) player which has a standard line out. Also, the digital (SPDIF) input has the 0dB level at 24% and 100% is +30dB. Why does this sound chip have such extreme settings available?

p.s.: How to interpret the dB values on a digital input?
