[Solved] Problems getting X to run on fresh install

I've tried adding the kernel parameter rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1 with no change.

I'm just getting a black screen when X starts - twm is running as a process. I've also tried adding the lines

install i915 /usr/bin/false
install intel_agp /usr/bin/false

to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Am I missing anything else?
Thanks in advance.

Re: [Solved] Problems getting X to run on fresh install

The system appears to use hybrid graphics see NVIDIA_Optimus or Bumblebee.

Re: [Solved] Problems getting X to run on fresh install

I've not used bumblebee or optimus on this system before (I've just installed a new hard drive and installed a fresh version of Arch on it). Could it be a modesetting problem?

Re: [Solved] Problems getting X to run on fresh install

This /is/ an optimus setup and you'll /have/ to configure it in some way.
The problem at hand is that the IGP is treated as secondary GPU but all outputs are wire to it.
Read the wiki, ask if you don't understand sth. but you will have to figure how you want to use the system yourself and then at least try to configure it accordingly. There's no way around that.

Re: [Solved] Problems getting X to run on fresh install

@seth - thanks. I have this card running the way I prefer on the old harddrive. This was an arch linux install from last November (so I realise that something may have changed since then). Is there any way I can copy the config from that older install to the new install? I don't seem to have any config files in /etc/X11 that look like anything I've changed. I'm not sure how to make the nvidia card (not the intel one) the primary display card, and I don't remember it from the previous install. If there's a way of doing that, please could you point me to it?

NVIDIA_Optimus#Disabling_switchable_graphics if you firmware does not provide such an option you will need to use the integrated GPU to display images on the screen.

That fixed it. Many thanks. I'll now mark as solved.
