Mouse cursor keeps disappearing in GNOME 3

Hey people, I'm running GNOME 3 on Arch and I have a small problem with the cursor. It sometimes just randomly disappears.

Sometimes it's after I click something, other times it disappears while I'm moving it. I can't find any pattern or specific time when it happens, so as far as I know, it's random.

Most of the people who had a similar problem all had it when GNOME 3.20 came out or something, but obviously that isn't the case here. Other people had problems with missing cursor themes, but that isn't my problem either. I don't know what's going on.

I might add that I discovered a temporary fix: if I enlarge the cursor to the highest possible, it becomes visible again, but this isn't perfect and it disappears again when the cursor hovers over an application running in Xwayland.

Also, as far as I know, I don't experience this problem when in Xorg.

Does anyone else face this problem?

Re: Mouse cursor keeps disappearing in GNOME 3

I switched back to Xorg and no problems so far. Looks like I'll wait till Wayland matures a bit more tongue

Re: Mouse cursor keeps disappearing in GNOME 3

To add something to this monologue, check/post your journal, are you sure it's GNOME making the cursor disappear and not e.g. some wonky cable simply disconnecting the mouse for a few seconds? Do you have any shell extensions installed? Some mouse hiding daemon like unclutter or similar? Can you reprodruce on other environments?

Hy,
I have a similar problem.  Always if I use the Super-Key to show the overview screen the mouse disappears. I also use Gnome3 with Wayland.

I'm also affected by this bug. Opening certain applications (e.g. settings or gedit) makes the mouse pointer show up again, but only for a short time.

Upstream bug report is here.

I need to correct myself. It happens not always if I use the Super-Key, but only very often.

Thanks for the upstream bug report.

Re: Mouse cursor keeps disappearing in GNOME 3

I think i have the same problem... or at least similar...
Randomly the mouse the mouse disappears, especially if i'm using a full screen application, for instance VLC or Firefox playing a video in full screen mode.
But, the thing is that i'm not using Wayland.
I remember people reporting this a few months ago in tweeter, reddit or some other forum, and ended with the idea that this is a Gnome bug...
I have been ignoring this behavior for some time now...

Sorry for the late reply, I'm quite busy.

Here is my journal. It's definitely GNOME because I've tested it with different mice, wired and wireless. I have 2 shell extensions, Pamac update indicator and Notes. I have no mice-hiding daemon. My Dad does use Plasma on this machine, and he reports no problem.

Another weird thing, if I'm on X.Org, instead of the mouse cursor disappearing it turns into a glitchy line or box.

@ProgrammAbel, you are not alone. My mouse also disappears. Same problem you describe. I am a keyboard user so I didn't care much. I just decided to look up if it's just me. smile

Same problem here with a touch/digitizer enabled Thinkpad Helix. The pointer disappears especially (but not only) when moving over the top bar or opening the overview. It doesn't always do this, though.

Re: Mouse cursor keeps disappearing in GNOME 3

I am having the same problem. The mouse is working fine with Firefox, VSCode, and Terminal, but disappears itself. This was not a problem a while ago so my guess is this was related to an update.

Chiming in to report the same problem. This has been occurring pretty consistently for the past 2-3 months for me. As rianquinn reports, my mouse shows up in Firefox, Terminal, etc. but not on any Gnome shell components (including the desktop). Looking into the upstream ticket now...

Re: Mouse cursor keeps disappearing in GNOME 3

I think that's enough "me too" posts -- there is an open bug on this issue (see post #7 in this thread). If you have input for the bug report, please post there.

Re: Mouse cursor keeps disappearing in GNOME 3

Same problem, but only on my laptop. Do you ppl. by any chance also have touch screens? Or maybe it's related to intel graphics?

Edit: sorry about the "me too" post.

Re: Mouse cursor keeps disappearing in GNOME 3

All my machines have Intel HD Graphics, some newer some a little older. But I haven't tried it on Arch yet, I had it on Manjaro and had the problem so I avoided using Wayland and Gnome until I heard the problem was resolved.
