Scarlett 2i4 analogue input into pulseeffects and back

I'm trying to play audio from my phone as the source into the 2i4 device, add some equalizer preset from pulseeffects and output to the 2i4 headphones. I can do this from the browser, but my CPU maxes out (in a previous post I tried to resolve this to no avail - just running low end spec laptop seems the problem), so trying an alternative... It's not obvious how to do that though.

So is it possible to use 3.5mm male-male connector from phone into one of the 2i4 1/4" inputs (I have a suitable male-female adaptor), pass this into pulseeffects from pavucontrol and output to Scarlett output device again from pavucontrol (as one would with say a HDMI source playing from the browser)? It's easy to get the 2i4 playing the signal by simply adjusting the gain and volume knobs, but not straight forward routing it into pulseeffects and back to the 2i4.

(Anyone have an article covering input/output/source/sink/line/aux terms etc?)).

EDIT:

Not related to the main post, but is a little thing I've noticed: if I use either one of the two phone input channels on the 2i4 and toggle the mono/stereo switch on the 2i4's front-plate to stereo it only produces sound in one of the ear's speaker despite using stereo/TRS 3.5mm lead and 1/4" adapter. Like if I actually wanted stereo I'd have to have a 3.5mm male to male-male split and plug into both phone input channels for both headphone speakers to give me sound. Why is it I can't get stereo on just one? Is it because the phone is only giving a mono signal and/or the phone's female jack is mono ?

Your phone has a stereo output. The inputs are mono.

You have the answer to how to connect your phone in your last paragraph.

The post is about using pulseeffects and back to the 2i4.

I wanted to help you with the basic setup first.

Why is it I can't get stereo on just one?

Answer: Because one input is mono, you cannot feed a stereo signal (phone output) into it and expect it to work. That is why you cannot use a single 3.5mm male-male connector from your phone into one of the 2i4 1/4" inputs. You have to split the stereo signal into both inputs.

I am sorry that I cannot help you with pulseeffects. Someone else might step in here.

How?

Solved with 1/8" to 1/4" stereo to mono+mono splitter lead.
