[Lenovo Carbon X1 Nano] Thunderbolt ports don't work after unplugging

If I connect to my laptop a monitor either directly on a TB port or via a TB dock, it works correctly.
However if I unplug the monitor (or the dock) and re-plug it in then it doesn't work, e.g., it doesn't show up in xrandr's output:

xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 2160 x 1350, maximum 32767 x 32767
eDP1 connected primary 2160x1350+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 280mm x 170mm
   2160x1350 59.74*+
DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP3-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP3-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP3-3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP4 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI3 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

The dock is usable in general whenever this happens, e.g., the keyboard/mouse still works the monitor outputs don't

Any ideas on what may be the problem or how I can debug this?

Thanks!
