2) is there a real simple program for testing 3d, such as glxgears (I was not aware this was gentoo specific)?

if you want the commercial drivers then you will have to download and use the NVIDIA installer binary. there used to be a package for the NVIDIA drivers but the commercial binary installer does a far better job and is far more feature rich than pacman and a nvidia package could be.

glxgears is NOT gentoo specific. in fact it is far older than gentoo.
