How to install preload?

Hello,
I had installed preload a few days ago, but in does not work.

The /var/lib/preload/preload.state is still empty.
So I am wondering, if the is maybe no prelod binary is installed on my system. or if it is installed, how could I get it automaticly started on system startup?

Re: How to install preload?

It runs as a daemon, hence you put it among others in your rc.conf.

I've tested it but I never figured it out. It did run but didn't really collect any data that I could find.

Re: How to install preload?

Do you mean, that your preload.state is empty, too?

I have installed ubuntu, as a second operating system, but ther it works fine, and brings me much more speed. the ubuntu preload.state isn't empty, it is full of names of librarys and very much numbers.

Re: How to install preload?

my preload.state has plenty of data in it; like KimTjik said, add it to your daemons list in rc.conf

For MOAR information on daemons there's a page in the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Daemons

Re: How to install preload?

My preload.state isn't empty and it's overall working. It's just that I might have had to big expectations. Nevertheless since this thread remembered me about it I give it another try before making any judgement.

And, I had addesd Preload to the demons (the last line in rc.conf) but I could not find a binary named preload, in ubuntu ther is an binary called preload

Re: How to install preload?

Did you do a pacman -S preload? There is a binary preload in /usr/sbin on my system.
If you want the location of files belonging to a package, pacman -Ql <package name> will give you a list of the package's files.

Also, the binary is called "preload", so I'm not sure "Preload" in your rc.conf will work as well.

Re: How to install preload?

Ive installed preload today, configured it and added to rc.conf. After reboot, preload exists in a process list, but ive even dont have /var/lib/preload/preload.state. /var/lib/preload directory is empty.  /var/logs/preload.log is also empty.
Strange thing is (maybe its my imagination) that i noticed large speedup when starting KDE.

Re: How to install preload?

Having the same issue here. Preload as a daemon in rc.conf. /var/log/preload.log stays empty. No /var/lib/preload/preload.state.

/etc/rc.d/preload restart, no effect. Preload starts correctly

Then running preload from cli:

preload.state gets created with data

preload.log stays rather empty

current preload.log (after starting from cli, restarting daemon, starting from cli again):

[Fri Feb  5 21:00:02 2010] loading conf from /etc/preload.conf
[Fri Feb  5 21:00:02 2010] loading state from /var/lib/preload/preload.state
[Fri Feb  5 21:01:45 2010] exit requested
[Fri Feb  5 21:01:45 2010] saving state to /var/lib/preload/preload.state
[Fri Feb  5 21:02:15 2010] loading conf from /etc/preload.conf
[Fri Feb  5 21:02:15 2010] loading state from /var/lib/preload/preload.state

No entries are being added while applications have started, ended and loaded again.

Somebody help please?

edit: update: it seems that the default config is not making preload to actually preload. Setting minsize = 2000 and running preload in debug mode (preload -d from cli) gets it going. The daemon does not seem to do anything other than logging the start and end of the program ran from the cli. It also gives a update in the log every hour that it's still running.

The output that should be there in the log should be the same as the debug info.

Stopping the daemon stops both preload processes (the daemon and the one running from the cli). It also corrupts the state file.

Furthermore the -V flag (verbose) does not work.

edit: update2: it seems that there is no maintainer for the preload version I'm using x86_64, maybe that's for a reason. I'm going to try to remove the package and build it from source to find out if the error is in the package.

Re: How to install preload?

Don't know if this is the case for you, but my preload.state is empty too, unless I open it as root. So you might give that a try.

Re: How to install preload?

I tried preload after seeing this thread and had the same problems with everyone else. Changing the verbosity level from 1 to 9 in /etc/conf.d/preload seemed to create /var/lib/preload/preload.state and everything seems to be working fine here. In the man page it says the default value should be 4 so gonna try that next. Its late and I am tired so I hope I'm not imagining things smile
