HP LaserJet P1005 vs Linux drivers [was a PEBKACH after all]

Hi,

I'm trying to set up my HP Laserjet P1005 printer on Arch.  After some googling I found that the foo2xqx driver should support it -- looking at AUR, I found foo2zjs driver package -- which isn't the same, but after a closer look it seems to include the foo2xqx driver as well.  So I installed it, restarted CUPS, added myself to the lp group, relogged in, added the printer to CUPS, and power-cycled the device itself.  Now, when I try to print anything, including the Printer Test Page, the printer only spits out blank page.

Has anything simillar happened to someone?  Any tips on where to start looking?

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cup … 20_to_work should work this way. instead of ./getweb 1020 use 1005

Thanks for your reply.  The driver indeed does work as it should, the problem was elsewhere.  The printer came with a toner cartridge that had security seal that needs to be taken out.  As you've probably guessed by now, I didn't take it out.

Well, lesson learned: Do read the manual that's full of pictures showing you how to remove the seal.

Sorry for "to revive" this topic, but I have a question. I have p1005 too, and do I need to install hplip?

My P1005 works very nicely in Arch.

hplip is not necessary. If you have hplip or hpijs installed and don't need them for any other printer, you should remove them and reboot before installing foo2zjs

A clean install of foo2zjs should show something like this in the cups printer page:

Printer Driver: HP LaserJet P1005 Foomatic/foo2xqx (recommended)
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: usb://HP/LaserJet%20P1005

Note that the device is usb. If any of the hp stuff is hanging around when you install foo2zjs, the device will be usbhp or something similar and the printer won't print if you try to remove the hp drivers.

BTW, the P1005 does not have a resume button. If you run out of paper in the middle of a print job, add paper to the tray, then lift the upper lid (as if you want to replace the toner cartridge). When you restore the lid to its normal position, printing will resume.
