My greeter application keeps crashing at boot. I'd like to fix it on my own, but unfortunately whenever I try to go to terminal (ctrl+alt+backspace) it just reboots the GUI and crashes again. Is there a way to boot directly to terminal to get me out of this loop? As of now I don't know how to edit anything because it's stuck looping into a crashing GUI.

Unfortunately I'm having difficulty editing the GRUB entry. I can edit the entry and tack on the 3, but as soon as I boot or go back to the main GRUB menu, the edit I entered disappears. How do I make sure my edit is permanent? (I am doing this under GRUB command line, as I have no way of accessing terminal for now )

As noted in my last post, I tried booting for both the main menu after editing the thing, and re-editing it and booting it from the edit window. Oh well, although it's not how it should be if you ctrl+alt+backspace each time the error popup comes for 6 times, you get access to terminal for 2 minutes. Arg.

To make it permanent, you need to edit you grub menu file in /boot/grub/menu.list
