login problems with KDM [solved]

Hello Everybody,

I recently screwed up my system pretty bad, (had problems with kernel panics, tried various things to fix it, eventually screwed up grub, decided to do a semi-clean install), anyway, I"m mostly back up and running, but I can't login via kdm, i get:

Apr 3 10:36:03 leela kdm: :0[3600]: pam_unix(kde:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost= user=fred

In auth.log.  I added another user, she logs in OK.  Fred can log into the terminal fine.  Any ideas on what's going on here?

Edit:

Well, nevermind.  I deleted my .kde folder, tried again, couldn't log in. then I couldn't login from the terminal either.  So I reset my password, now kdm + terminal logins are fine.  Maybe, I mistyped my password (twice) when I entered it, consistently typed my password RIGHT into kdm, and consistently mistyped it the same way I set it, when I loged into the console?  It strains believability, but I think this may have been what happened.
