wireshark and ettercap-gtk won't start

hi all :>
got a weird problem with wireshark and ettercap-gtk when i try to start them (from console):

root ~ #  wireshark
No protocol specified
(wireshark:32227): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

root ~ #  ettercap-gtk --gtk
ettercap NG-0.7.3 copyright 2001-2004 ALoR & NaGA
No protocol specified
GTK+ failed to initialize. Is X running?
