KDE 4.2.2 stabilty problem?

Hi,

I just reinstalled Arch i686 on my laptop to dual boot with my Fedora 10 install. I run KDE on both installs although fedora still has KDE4.2.1 in stable and KDE4.2.2 in testing. The other difference is xorg-server 1.6 in Arch (which made me reinstall in the fist place), kernel 2.6.29 and nvidia 180-44

My issue is this, since I dual boot the hardware is the same for both installs but for some reason my fedora KDE is insanely stable and solid wheras the Arch KDE (official from extra) has quite some issues. At least two or three times a day an KDE app (not the desktop entirely though) crashes with a SIGABRT. This happened to me today for example in Dolphin, Gwenview and kopete (corrupting my contacts in the process). it mainly happens upon closing the app by clicking the "X" it seems.

further, on two occasions I have come accross the following error when starting a KDE app from the CLI: "KUniqueApplication complains ' Cannot find the D-Bus session server' but when i try again after a reboot this was gone again for a while (i had to start systemsettings with sudo to gain enough rights to alter advanced settings when it gave this message).

Is there any way to tell or discover what might be causing this behaviour? Is for some reason Arch in KDE less stable then in fedora (i would not know why this would be the case though) or is the combination of 2.6.29/kde/nvidia a lesser tested one? I would really like to learn what makes it behave like this, because I do not have *any* crashes at all in F10, but in Arch I get my fonts to look *way* better, plus the nvidia driver is a little more recent then 180-29. I would file a bug for this, but for now I have no clue as to what is causing this so where to file it against.

thx,
stefan

If you have custom plasmoids installed, try removing them. I faced similar "random" freezes with the quickaccess applet built from aur.

Also, do try moving your .kde4 folder to another place to start on a clean slate. A new .kde4 folder will regenerate.

I guess it might be a problem with the user who started the dbus server. If you are using su, make sure you do a "su - <user>" and try starting the apps. Other than that KDE 4.2.2 with Arch is so far very much stable for me.

Re: KDE 4.2.2 stabilty problem?

Hi,

thanks for the reply, however i have *no* plasmoids / customizations done to my KDE setup. This is a new Arch install with a brand new fresh KDE install. I have two test users I added to my system, both with a new profile and clean kde folder, both users respond the same.

So I have a vanilla KDE from extra, without any changes in theme, widgets or whatever on a new install with a new user.

Hmm.. maybe its something to do with laptops? KDE 4 does include some power saving apps. You might wanna check them for cpu throttle etc.

Another option is to try kdemod and see if the same thing happens.

Since its new, its probably due to hardware, most likely the graphic card. Xorg settings maybe?

Re: KDE 4.2.2 stabilty problem?

could it be due to the fact that KDE4.2.2 is compiled against QT4.5 whereas the KDE dev team advised against this? I believe qtmod is still at 4.4 and my fedora install is running KDE4.2.1 against qt4.4 as well.?!

I really doubt hardware issues causing SIGABRT errors in specific seperate apps, i was suspicious about nvidia for a while, but then I would expect X to crash entirely, and I just see random crashes of certain KDE apps. Besides KDE is running smoothyl on fedora on the same hardware

It is totally contained to QT apps from what I can see, firefox, gftp and pidgin do not suffer from this at all. And it also happens when I leave the apps running idly.

Re: KDE 4.2.2 stabilty problem?

If it is due compilation problems, I guess everyone would be experiencing it equally.  I have experienced "random" crashes with Qt apps like dolphin but not to such an extent to make it unusable. I usually dismiss those as a natural side-effect of using cutting edge software.
