X crashes when trying to play video

When trying to play video with mplayer or vlc, X crashes (this only happened after the last batch of updates, a lot of libs but I don't know which ones)

Now I just downgraded to xorg-server-1.5.x and that seems to fix the problem temporarily

It might be a good idea to post which graphics driver you're using, and what video output you're using in your media player (xv, x11, etc)

I'm getting almost exactly the same errors when running xine (from the xine-ui package) and vlc on an absolutely fresh and updated installation. I'm using Openbox and the mga driver with an xorg.conf which only contains

Downgrading to xorg-server 1.5.3 did not solve my problem!

I had the same issue with intel, but I solved it removing the 'AccelMethod' entry on my xorg.conf. Unfortunately, you didn't append a 'AccelMethod' on your videocard, so I don't know what's wrong with your configuration. Which program are you using for video playing? are  you using the xv output?.

Edit: Yes, you were using mplayer and Xv. Crap... I dunno man

Okay, at least I have video playing again (with the latest Xorg updates) by having a look at http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=32259 and choosing the X11 video output options for Vlc and GMplayer.

Tinkering with xorg.conf did nothing for me, and I couldn't get the Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" working properly at all.

Oh well, I know I've got old gear on this computer, but hey, it used to work without mucking around. Not exactly "solved" ...

Ok you should read the docs (I know nobody does )

If you have an Nvidia card don't DON'T use DRI. Remove it from your xorg.conf!
Also remove all the modeline crap, you probably won't need it anymore with the new xserver

I have the same issue that hofa, the fullscreen doesn't work anymore :

I have the same issue with mplayer. I use a nvidia GeForce Go 6200 card.  I don't use DRI in xorg.conf. The fullscreen mode was working well few times ago. I think the issue come from one of the last arch-package update. Compiz-fusion is enabled on my computer.

I know this is kind of a late reply, but I was having problems with vlc and xfce with compositing. Turned off compositing (compiz-fusion for gnome) and voila vlc worked like a charm.
