Bad graphics in X

Related slightly to my earlier post http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=71149.

I decided to go out on a limb and i renamed my xorg.conf and allowed X to start with no guidance.  I can get into a "usable" graphical interface but the screen is all corrupt. Lots of strange lines and it's broken up oddly.  However the cursor and conky (after blindly logging in) display properly but other than those i can't see what i'm doing.  The background is screwed up as is the fluxbox menu.  I just upgraded to the new intel driver 2.6.3-4. (I wasn't getting ANY image with the old one so i bill this as an improvement).

Any ideas what is running afoul of my video card?

Re: Bad graphics in X

maybe you are already past this, but since not mentioned in the linked post:
have you tried xf86-video-intel-legacy and the various xorg.conf settings (heurestic-greedy, AccelMethod usw)?

Re: Bad graphics in X

Ahh that worked nicely.  Now however, 3D apps can run but i get a new error i've never seen before:

Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic.

What does this mean.  It's obviously not fatal since I can still run GLX gears and get framerates of 400+ fps.
