Can anyone recommend a DE/WM combo that remembers window size and position? I want apps and dirs to open at certain sizes and certain locations on the desktop. I tried devilspie/gdevilspie for gnome but its too much of a hassle to set everything up.

Kwin does that, per application as well as per window.

Hi!
Somewhere I read something...which was... (aaah, xfce faq's, there it is!) ...that "devilspie" or "wmctrl" can do the job for any (/most) WM / DE's. Didnt have time to try that yet though.

you can do that in Openbox and Fluxbox using per app settings.
most tiling wm's also give you this flexibility.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

So does IceWM. Although it requires editing the window options (winoptions) configuration file.
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

Do any of these do it automatically? Meaning it will open windows at the same size and place where I previously closed them? I'll be trying out a few now. Thanks.

I use devilspie to do this.

Sawfish does that (it's what devilspie was based on actually )
Enlightenment does that as well, and has the options to set those as well.
