Is everything in the pacman repos up-to-date regarding the Compiz + Compiz Fusion merge? I noticed installing the group "compiz" drug in cf a while back, but it does not now, is this because it is updated?

i don't think so. Even in aur compiz still being the 0.8.2 release.
compiz++, as is know the merge, is a complete rewrite of compiz from C to C++. Even thou there've been a lot of progress on that, compiz++ stills quite unusable. There are only a few basic plugins for it. even CUBE isn't rewriten yet.
You beat u will wait for quite a long time yet to put ur hands on a decent unstble but usable compiz++
