[SOLVED] Firefox: How can I always show a program to open with?

When downloading files, there are the Open With and Save As options. On Ubuntu, the Open With option had the default program for opening the specified kind of file in the drop-down and the Browse option to find a program to open it with. On Arch I just have the Browse option. Is there a way I can add certain programs to this drop-down? I am aware that you can set Firefox to always open certain kinds of files with a certain program, but that does not give me the option to choose to open or download, it just always opens.

AFAIR it is a firefox bug which was supposed to be fixed in 3.1. Annoys the hell out of me.
What DE do you use?

I use firefox 3.5b4 and this problem seems to be gone there. In earlier versions it sometimes worked and sometimes didn't, really annoying. Imho 3.5.b4 is already VERY stable, works perfectly here. I'd recommend to either wait for it to be released as stable or simply wait. Or use another browser

well when I install mime-types it shows some applications...

sudo pacman -S mime-types

I have gmime, gnome-mime-data, mime-types and shared-mime-info installed and yet it does not really work as intended. With f3.5b4 it still won't associate for example OOo or PDF files. I'll have to look into this more.

You'll love the improvements ;-) But still, firefox is as far away from being perfect like any other browser...

Firefox 3.5b4 doesn't seem to solve the problem. I have the same issue as before.

You need a ~/.mailcap file. If you don't have a .mailcap, it looks in /etc/mailcap. It'll look something like this:

application/msword;/usr/bin/ooowriter %s
application/pdf;/usr/bin/epdfview %s

So first you list the mime-type, and then the associated program after a semicolon. %s represents the file to be passed on.

You don't need the /usr/bin/ part if it's in your $PATH.

Alternatively, you can edit mimeTypes.rdf in your firefox profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/MimeTypes.rdf

I'm confused. Is there a package which provides the mailcap file or am I supposed to edit it by hand to add each and every filetype association on my system?
