Abiword's wacky text

Much to my chagrin, Abiword's text is overlapping and not disappearing when it is deleted. The later case is solved by refreshing the window, leading me to believe it might be a buffer issue. Here's what multiple lines of text looks like. There is negative spacing between lines.

Anyone got any ideas? I saw this bug reported on abiword's website somewhere but nothing has been done about it. Curiously, my lappy still displays everything fine.
