how can i implement a 'show desktop' on my trayer/task bar?
using tint2-svn currently.

Super+D keyboard shortcut. Not an icon in the ol' tray, but it's the same functionality and works faster IMO.
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.

With pypanel, you could use xdotool to bind the Openbox Super-D shortcut with a mouse action at a specified location on your panel.
See this thread for some ideas:

I don't think tint2 offers any ability to connect arbitrary actions to a mouse click on the panel. You're limited to the built-in mouse actions.
It does look like someone has created a patch to open a calendar when clicking on the clock -- perhaps you could get some ideas from that:

The super key is the windows key.
You can change the keybinding, of course to A-d or C-d or F10 or anything you'd like. Simply edit ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml.

If you want to show your desktop to access your menu you could also not maximize your tint panel (leaving room on both sides to access it) or bind a key to display the menu.
Otherwise I'm with the above suggestions..
