cannot detect display..?

i can run a window manager when using the lousy gdm, but when i attempt to start it from the terminal, it spits that it cannot detect display/video drivers.

running on ibm thinkpad r40, radeon.

same problem when i try to run anything requiring video (image viewing, links-g, mplayer) from bash as a user.

any suggestions?

Re: cannot detect display..?

Excuse me if I'm have misunderstood the problem, but you can't just run the executable for the window manager because Xorg needs to be started first. You need to put "exec window-manager-name" in ~/.xinitrc and then run startx.

Re: cannot detect display..?

yeah, that was real dumb on my part..
.xinitrc, right.
installed slim, too. much better.

but the latter part of the question still stays.
cannot run anything video in the console as a regular user, whereas using "sudo", works just fine.
