Lightweight KDE-Like Desktop?

OK, so I like KDE, and use it on my Desktop. I plan to get a Asus EEE PC or Dell Mini 10 (how's support for these computers, BTW before I buy one) and would *like* to have a lightweight KDE-Like desktop. I Know I can use OpenBox and just use KDE Apps, but I like panels and stuff of that nature smile And PyPanel, well, umm.... tongue

Thanks, and sorry for sloppy post. Im too tired to do this. School IS out this Friday though for the summer, so no more being tired (kinda)

Re: Lightweight KDE-Like Desktop?

Well you can install kdemod-minimal (kdemod official webpage).
KDEMod packages are splitted (have a look directly in repo), so you can install KDE apps you need separately.

Re: Lightweight KDE-Like Desktop?

Does anyone know about the differences between kdemod-minimal vs xfce4.6? I am using xfce right now and its ok, but would like to know if this kdemod-minimal is more lightweight or closer to xfce?

I don't know what you mean by more lightweight or closer to xfce. I have an eee 904, and kdemod doesn't run very well on it... XFCE4 runs better, but with such a small screen, its annoying to try to have menu's and big dialog boxes popping up.

As for the OP question about the support of netbooks, my eeepc works 100% out of box with the latest vanilla kernel (even mic/webcam/wireless!)

I guess this is more or less what I was asking wink

Re: Lightweight KDE-Like Desktop?

I had an eee-pc 701 and that is a minimal machine.  It ran Chakra (An arch distro w kdemod http://chakra-project.org/ fairly well and that was with 1GB ram and a 900 MHz processor.  I kept it as a "live" install on an SD card, set it up the way I wanted, then on shutdown, I chose to save my overlay.  You might want to go that route if you want KDE4.  This way, the OS runs out of RAM so it is really fast.

I actually have it on my laptop, my significant other's laptop, and my desktop this way.  All reading from a micro sd card in a Sandisk MicroMate reader.  If you just do "stuff" without a lot of heavy modding, you will be impressed.

Re: Lightweight KDE-Like Desktop?

I preffer to use XFCE or E17 with eee smile My 900 uses Easy Peasy Linux, it looks good and runs well. Also I tried Arch and Chakra with it, it also ran fine smile

Re: Lightweight KDE-Like Desktop?

If by "kde-like" you mean consistent/cohesive, then consider XFCE or LXDE(which is technically just openbox+LX tools, like lxpanel and lxsession). There's also E17, which isn't a DE itself, of course, but still pretty cohesive when used to emulate that. All of these have their own panels and such, but only XFCE and E17 have a settings menu and such integrated.
