I get no sound with this metronome app.

Two things I recommend to check:
- try without any other music-playing application or daemon running (even not playing at the moment) - including mpd and browser.
- GTick uses oss, not alsa. If you are using alsa, you need alsa-oss package

Solved! I run gtick with aoss ("aoss gtick").
