I'm running Archlinux on Virtualbox 2.2.4 with Vista as the host operating system. I have installed the guest additions, so I am currently using the vboxvideo driver instead of the vesa driver.
I set "1280x800" as the resolution in the Modes / Display subsection. However, it's clearly still 1024x768, which is confirmed by xrandr -q.
The search feature and wiki give command-line instructions for a Linux host operating system. What about for Windows?

Did you try to check "automatically adjust guest resolution" for the machine and resize the window a few times (wait between tries)? I noticed some random behaviour with my vista guest, but that could be solved by making it fullscreen and different sizes repeatedly (if you see it "get striped", wait for it to refresh - if not, try again immediately).

I believe you also need to start a deamon on the guest http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vir … _Additions

Why vista???

Same problem here... (Also be careful when upgrading the kernel, I couldn't boot with 2.6.30.)

It seems that the vboxvideo driver supports various resolutions but it must be explicitly specified which one to use.
I added a modeline to the Monitor section:
Modeline "1280x800@60" 83.46 1280 1344 1480 1680 800 801 804 828 -hsync +vsync
And then I told to use this mode by adding one line in the Display subsection of the Screen section:
Modes "1280x800@60"
I couldn't believe it... but it works! Hope it's the same with you.
