changing the login background

Ok so to start off, I'm using gnome but not GDM, however whenever my screensaver goes up it locks the session so I have to login through a nice screen. I've been getting my eyecandy all set up the way I want it, but i can't seem to change the background image behind the login terminal (which I HAVE changed in favor of a nice on on gnome-look) Everything I've looked up seems to be about changing the gdm loginbackground but i didn't even take the gdm package when i was installing gnome-extras. Any tips?
