Shiretoko/Firefox crashing on ever more sites

How do you Arch'ers handle the frequent Firefox crashes? Or is it only me?

On my AMD 64-bit system Firefox crashes (closes silently) on
http://www.nytimes.com
http://www.guardian.co.uk
http://osdir.com/ml/lang.haskell.gui/20 … 00008.html
http://www.linux.com/feed/121945
... and many others.

This has been going on since late 2008, but has steadily become worse. I have not found a common denominator and searches in the forum don't give a usable solution. Firefox add-ons don't make a difference, nor does configuration of helper apps, from what I can see. Any tips?

Re: Shiretoko/Firefox crashing on ever more sites

I can use them quite fine. But I'm using a 32-bit. Any other 64-bit users having these troubles?

Re: Shiretoko/Firefox crashing on ever more sites

Only on a HP workstation with a dicky mobo. (randomly, during boot, it beeps informing you that there is no installed ram)
It mem tests fine. It runs pretty much fine. It doesn't Panic or Oops for no reason.
but firefox just slams shut randomly. It's been getting progressively worse recently tho.
But its not running 3.5 I haven't updated it yet.

Re: Shiretoko/Firefox crashing on ever more sites

I would backup ~.mozilla (mv ~/.mozilla ~/mozilla)
and try to run ff without any custom configs plugins allowing FF to create fresh profile. Hopefully this fixes your problem.

Re: Shiretoko/Firefox crashing on ever more sites

I am having crashes with FF3.5 on x86_64 too. I suspect that it comes from the flash plugin (it's mostly on flash-heavy sites). Adblock plus and the likes do a good job at preventing lot's of crashes. Actually, I love Adblock: It makes the whole web experience much faster, lighter, and adfree big_smile

FF 3.5 x86_64, no problems with any of those sites, even when I disable NoScript, Adblock, etc.

Mine goes unresponsive for a bit whilst it is loading. I find Slashdot to be really bad for slowing my browser down.

Re: Shiretoko/Firefox crashing on ever more sites

Thanks for all the responses!

I made a fresh Arch install a couple of months back, with a fresh FF profile. I also let FF 3.5 get a new profile. Both to no avail. I am really stumped as to what may be causing FF to crash so often!

I am also using Adblock Plus, which I agree is very handy for 'tidying up' certain sites smile

Well - Arch and everything else seem to be running near perfect (touch wood!) right now; everything is fine except the 'æøp)/&#§"! forsakken Shiretoko/Firefox...

Have you installed the flashblock addon? It should reduce your problems,

Flash causes me more crashes in Firefox, Swiftweasel and Seamonkey than anything else and I hate it with a loathing.

From my experience in these forums, the single greatest cause of all Firefox crashes comes from poorly written GTK themes.

Well on my Windows machine at work, I get regular crashes on certain flash based sites.

No, I have not tried the flashblock addon. Will do and report back. Thanks smile

Re: Shiretoko/Firefox crashing on ever more sites

OK - I installed the Flashblock add-on and it seems to have 'cured' the crashingitis. I tested about 24 problematic sites without a crash. Opera handles the same sites fine, but I feel more at home in FF.

I am a bit hesitant about marking this [Solved] though, given that Firefox ought to allow normal browsing without add-ons...

Thanks again, everybody - and especially to Cotton who held my hand! smile

Since this is a different problem, I think you should start a separate thread...

Have you tried a total uninstall (-Rsn) and then reinstalling? That's all I can think of. Remember backup...!

I don't use flashblock at all, but I do use noscript, though I still didn't have a problem with any of the sites noted as faulty.

All those work fine for me. x86_64 FF (branded) 3.5. The only crash I've gotten recently was using moonlight (MS Silverlight)...

Re: Shiretoko/Firefox crashing on ever more sites

I am also using Firefox 3.5 on 64-bit Arch, and it crashes alot. I guess it's due to flash. I use the Adblock add-on (though I do not block out flash). However, I am not 100% certain it's only pages with flash that makes it crash.

It also crashes when I try to open a link to a file which is supposed to open in another program (.torrent or .mpg).
