Engineer workstation

Hi, i installed arch to an engineer friend of mine, and he ask me for applications to use on linux that fit his needs.
1) He wants a Visio replacement. I heard that the *.vsd are kinda "private" and there isnt any replacement for thi software. I installed Kivio, but he says that is not as complete as visio.
2) A script that converts *.vsd files to *.xml files.
3) A good fortran IDE.
4) a cientific calculator that supports ecuations.
5) A good math formula editor.
6) And another maths application that you people consider good on linux.
Thanx!

Re: Engineer workstation

1) and 2) visual basic != visio, not sure what to say here
3) He needs an IDE?  Respectfully submit using a text editor and a compiler.  Short of that, googling "fortran IDE" brings up a number of suggestions.
4) I'm not sure what you mean by "supports equations".  gcalctool is a scientific calculator though.
5) I don't know what you mean by this either.  OpenOffice has a "formula editor" (equation typesetter).
6) Python.

Re: Engineer workstation

Hi.

He can use:

octave

mathematica

gnuplot

spice

gambas (basic with ide)

similar to visio, best is openoffice draw, it has conectors, etc, or any uml graphical tool (look for UML and linux in google)

latex as formula editor and generating documentation (see lyx for an ide)

and in the kde edu are some useful applications for formulas.

Re: Engineer workstation

I think Geany is supposed to work with Fortran.  It's a pretty nice IDE.  Also, assuming he wants a replacement for Visio and not Visual Basic, Dia Diagrams is pretty nice, though it probably doesn't have all of Visio's features either.

If there are showstopper Windows apps that nothing could ever replace, don't forget wine, or even Windows XP in VirtualBox.
