Slim reports 'Unable to execute login command' every other boot

(note: this is on a different machine to the browser issue I also have a post open for)

So, Pretty much every time I cold boot my machine Slim refuses to let me log in with the message 'Unable to execute login command'.  I have to big-button the machine (I have no other way to proceed at this point) and try again.  This usually repeats a couple of times before finally allowing me to login.

This is the same for 2 different users, both using xfce4.

Anywhere I should be looking first for the problem?

Re: Slim reports 'Unable to execute login command' every other boot

Check the login_cmd line in /etc/slim.conf; the default is

login_cmd exec /bin/sh - ~/.xinitrc %session

Look at your .xinitrc (or other file as specified in the above line).  Make sure it exists and is a valid /bin/sh script.  Make sure it doesn't have any errors.  Try running xinit and see what output you get.
