Hey there,
I run Arch on a Thinkpad T61p.
I booted up earlier today and when I ran startx, the monitor of the laptop just shut off. The keyboard didn't do anything (such as killing X) and I had to just hit the power button to turn it off.
I upgraded the system with pacman, but despite nvidia & kernel upgrades, nothing changed. I used nvidia-xconfig to generate a new xorg.conf, but nothing changed. If I remove xorg.conf, X at least runs, except at the wrong screen resolution, and obviously, other problems obviously due to not using the nvidia X driver.
I'm totally stuck. Any help?

What says the xorg.log file? Sounds like x is started with a resolution that your monitor can't handle.

Try adding Option "DPMS" to your monitor config section in your xorg.conf
Shell Scripter | C/C++/Python/Java Coder | ZSH
