Re: No Restart and Shutdown after switching from gdm to slim

Not sure if this helps, but at slim login you can type in halt as username and give root password to shutdown or reboot as username with root password to restart.

I imagine the reason you can't shutdown/restart from GNOME anymore is because GDM starts some services that slim doesn't. Perhaps running ck-launch-session before issuing halt or reboot command might help (try in a terminal first).

Ah that's why I never had a shutdown button!

When using slim or startx, there never is a shutdown button (not in gnome or kde). I just use "sudo halt".

Re: No Restart and Shutdown after switching from gdm to slim

you must run slim as daemon by adding them to DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf,
then open .xinitrc file in your home directory, and edit line started with exec
for example

exec ck-launch-session gnome-session

What's the difference by running slim as a daemon and as inittab program?

From http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Add … on_startup

The inittab method is recommended for various reasons, one being that it will allow you to boot directly into framebuffer mode from GRUB. This is an advantage should the graphics driver crash in X, for example, you would not be forced to fix your system from a live cd or through other needlessly complex means.

Re: No Restart and Shutdown after switching from gdm to slim

Just for completing this thread: I used

 exec ck-launch-session gnome-session

instead of

 exec gnome-session

in my .xinitrc

There was no need to running slim as a daemon, it is still started via an entry in the inittab file.
