[Solved] No keyboard input when boot to runlevel 5

Hi folks,

Did update this morning. Now when I boot into runlevel 5 and get a GDM screen I can't type my user name. Can't do a ctrl-alt-delete either, so its something to do with the keyboard interface, its completely dead.

I have a grub entry for runlevel 3 and when I boot there the keyboard works fine, even when I startx.

Computer is Dell Studio 15.

Any ideas?

-Shawn

Re: [Solved] No keyboard input when boot to runlevel 5

Here it is. Seems I might have some font paths may have changed and there might be so hal issues. I guess I could have missed an update message somewhere, but don't understand how runlevel 3 and runlevel 5 would be different as far as X is concerned. Anyway, thanks for looking.

Re: [Solved] No keyboard input when boot to runlevel 5

1. "how runlevel 3 and runlevel 5 would be different" -> Maybe you don't run X in runlevel 3, but you can check it in the /etc/inittab.

2. Did you try to put this into your /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AllowMouseOpenFail"  "true"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"

EndSection

3. I don't think that's the problem but you can comment out the type1, freetype related lines in the xorg.conf, because it caused error, you can see in the Xorg.log

Re: [Solved] No keyboard input when boot to runlevel 5

Did you try with hotplugging enabled? With the Intel driver there's no need to use an xorg.conf file, it'll load the right driver automatically. Just make sure you start the hal daemon on boot (add hal to rc.conf) and use an empty xorg.conf. Oh, and you need to install xf86-input-evdev for hotplugging to work.

Actually, how to create an entry on grub for booting into runlevel 3?

Just edit innittab and delate hash before id:5:initdeafalt: and add hash before same command but with id:3: wink

Re: [Solved] No keyboard input when boot to runlevel 5

Hi all,

First - thanks for all the replys.

I had a small time this morning to work with it. I installed xdm and the results are the same booting into runlevel 5 -- keybord input is dead. So I changed back to gdm.

I found that if I boot into runlevel 3, I can then telinit 5 and I can type my username and password just fine. So the problem (no keyboard input) is only when BOOTING into runlevel 5.

So, I noticed that gdm is flagged as outdated, not conviced that is the problem though.

I also went back to see what was updated last time I did pacman -Syu. Here is a listing:

I diff'ed out the rc.conf and inittab files and made changes where needed. Here is my inittab:

There are some other files that were changed during the last Syu. I didn't realize until now that xorg-server changed. I guess I will rebuild the xorg conf file, though I'm not totally conviced x is the problem since it works with startx and teleint 5. Outta time for now.

Here is part of my /boot/grub/menu.lst file. Booting into x is fine but you should always have an easy bailout planned ahead when x fails:

Re: [Solved] No keyboard input when boot to runlevel 5

1. Make sure you HAL started --> don't insert a "@" before it in rc.conf
2. Delete your xorg.conf
3. Install "xorg-input-drivers"
4. After you install this restart HAL or reboot.

It seems to me that it may be a configuration problem with your inittab. Whats the diff between the two?

Re: [Solved] No keyboard input when boot to runlevel 5

Wow,

So I tried removing the xorg.cong file and it worked. Best I can figure is that there is some change in the new xorg-server that didnt like my old xorg.conf setup. Thats all I had to do to fix this problem.

I had no idea about the xorg.conf file not being needed any more. Thanks all for your help.

Now I need to find out why bzflag started seg faulting and I will be happy!
