Whenever I send a message on irssi I get the follow error:
Cannot get client list properties.
(_NET_CLIENT_LIST or _WIN_CLIENT_LIST)
I also get the same message when I try `wmctrl -l` to list all open windows. It seems like dwm is not providing a client list. I haven't found anyone else with this problem.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Does this also occur on a clean build of dwm?

Yes, it still occurs on a clean build of dwm without any patches to dwm.c or modifications to config.h.

I also get that error using wmctrl (I don't need it for anything, just testing it for you ). However, I use irssi, and I don't get any error msgs. I'm using urxvtd/urxvtc as a terminal.
Anyway, from Wikipedia/wmctrl site -- "wmctrl is a command used to control windows in EWMH and NetWM compatible, X Window, window manager." I don't think dwm implements that standard. Spent 30 seconds looking, but didn't immediately see a list of compliant WM's.

@firecat53: I'm using urxvt as well. Since I use screen, I tried with screen and without screen, urxvt and xterm. All give the same result. I'm wondering why my irssi seems to request the window list and yours doesn't. I don't need wmctrl for anything; I just used it to make sure it wasn't strictly an irssi/screen problem. Do you mind posting your .Xdefaults for urxvt and ~/.irssi/config? Maybe there's a setting you have that I don't that could disable the checking in irssi or something?

Running any scripts in irssi?
archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

rson451: Oh wow. I had hilightcmd.pl running at the time which I setup to use wmctrl to set the window to urgent on hilight. I wasn't getting hilighted so I thought that the script was never being executed, but apparently it was. I've now disabled that script and configured irssi, screen, and urxvt to set urgent status on bell. Thank you!
